Urban Sound Symposium

April 19-21, 2023

Early-career Professionals in Sound

“Early-career Professionals in Sound” is a satellite event geared at professionals who are closer to the beginning of their career in urban sound, where we discuss their challenges in the field and the opportunities they see or would like to see. This is two-part event: first, we organize an online moderated discussion in February, where we identify several preliminary topics of interest in a friendly group discussion open to everyone around the world, irrespective of whether they can attend USS 2023 or not; second, we have a follow-up, in-person discussion during USS 2023 where we outline some tangible ways of making the field more early-career researcher friendly. This will be a safe forum to vent, discuss and work together on a shared vision of the field. The results of both discussions will be shared in the final panel of the USS 2023, on the future of urban sound.

Why ?

Following USS 2021, there was expressed interest from attendees for a forum where the future of the field would be discussed among the ‘younger’ generation of researchers and practitioners, with ideas emerging towards a new ‘soundscape manifesto’.

Details

If you are interested in participating, please contact Edda Bild, herself an early-career soundscape researcher, at edda.bild@mcgill.ca. The first online discussion will take place on Feb 23rd 2023, at 10:00 AM EST. More details to come soon.

Please consider attending the February online discussion even if you are not planning / are unable to attend USS 2023 in person; your input will still be instrumental. This is an event open to early-career professionals in sound regardless of age and whether you’re a researcher or a practitioner!
